Another area of artistic study that is often neglected are facial features and expressions. A great resource for the study of the human figure in general, but specifically the features of the face is

The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expressions by Gary Faigin:
While attending the Seattle Academy of Fine Art (Now the Gage Academy) where Gary Faigin is the director, I had the privilege of attending many of his lectures.
Not only is Gary a superb artist, he is a terrific teacher, and his lectures are extraordinary. His knowledge of the human anatomy is unparalleled, he is extremely articulate, and conveys the information in a very practical manner - what it all means to the artist who is attempting to paint a convincing figure.
His book is excellent, it has become an industry standard (and rightfully so,) and I highly recommend it.
