Master's of the American West 2011

Hey all,
Just a quick notice and reminder, The Masters of the American West exhibit is coming next month to The Autry Museum in Burbank, CA. Also, they recently posted much of the artwork on the official site. Even if you have little interest in "cowboy art" I cannot recommend this show enough, many of the best contemporary realist artists can be seen in this show.

Greatest Show on Earth (July 2010)

I have not done this feature in awhile, so I have a double feature for you this month.
First, is the Jean-Léon Gérôme exhibit at the Getty Museum in L.A.. All I will say is in my opinion this is one of the top 5 art exhibits I have ever seen. Beyond that this exhibit has been discussed to no end elsewhere on the web by persons better qualified than I.

Second we have the San Diego Comic-Con. I am not exhibiting this year, but I will be around as a fan and helping some friends for a couple of the days. One of the main draws for me at SDCC are the books. In the age of the internet this is not as big of a deal, but it is still one of the best places to go and actually be able to flip through just about any art book you have ever thought about buying. What follows is my list of interest for this year so far. Please feel free to comment if you know of others I should keep a lookout for.

Greatest Show on Earth (July 09) Addendum

I have just been made aware, by Jeff Watts and his lovely wife Krista that on there recent trip to Spain they had the pleasure of viewing an immense showing of Joaquín Sorolla's work at the Museo Nacional del Prado. I have had the pleasure twice in my life to see his murals at the Hispanic Society of America in New York. Jeff tells me these are in the show and they make up only a few of the 200+ pieces on exhibit.

So by hook or by crook, board a bus, board a plane, board a train. Go and see this show(now if I could just figure out a way to take my own advice).

The Museo del Prado is presenting the largest and most important retrospective ever to be devoted to the work of Joaquín Sorolla, the most internationally celebrated Spanish painter of the XIX century. The exhibition includes more than 100 paintings by the artist and will offer a comprehensive overview of his finest works, among them all of his great masterpieces. They include the group of panels entitled Visions of Spain, painted for the Hispanic Society of America and brought to Spain by Bancaja in 2007. This exceptional exhibition has benefited from the sponsorship of Bancaja, who in addition to their significant undertaking as organising body of the exhibition “Sorolla. Vision of Spain” that was shown to great acclaim in various Spanish cities, has now made a further contribution in the form of their collaboration with this major exhibition project at the Prado.

Greatest Show On Earth (November)

The Art of Warner Bros. Cartoons November 14 – January 18, 2009

Opening tomorrow at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento is an exhibition of the art work and the creative process of one of the greatest influences on my young artistic mind. The denizens of "Termite Terrace" and more specifically Chuck Jones and Bob McKimson fed my early artistic tendencies with a candy most bizarre.

Greatest Show on Earth (October)

James Gurney is the consummate "fine illustrator", one of the artist's that I hold up as a role model in all aspects of execution and professionalism. I had the pleasure to hear him speak and watch him paint at World Con in Anaheim in 2007 I believe. To say I was impressed is to put it lightly. Why does Switzerland have to be so far away

Greatest Show on Earth (for May)

I plan on making this a regular feature. I will call out an art show I plan to see or would like to see, but can't. I am proud to start it off with a show of my very own wife's work.
